USB Type-C

USB Type-C names the reversible connector, not a guaranteed data rate, charging wattage or video capability. [C004A]

The shape is the beginning of the answer, not the end.

Recognize USB-C

Look for

Look for the small rounded rectangle. A Type-C socket is an opening with an internal tongue; the plug face is a rounded shell. These diagrams are recognition aids, not mating tolerances.

Identify the documented form

Check which job the particular USB-C port performs.

  1. USB-C identifies a reversible connector; it does not assign a data rate, charging output or video mode. S003

The useful distinction

Documented observations

Nikon lists one Type-C data connector and one Type-C Power Delivery connector on the Z 8. [C004B]

Nikon directs computer picture transfer through the Z 8 USB data connector and states that the computer will not detect the camera through its USB Power Delivery connector. [C004D]

The Z 8 does not take operating power through its USB data connector. Power through its separate Power Delivery connector requires an inserted battery; menu setting and operating state distinguish operating power from battery charging, with EN-EL15c/b charging conditions documented separately. [C004E]

The TS4 manual separates three ordinary 10 Gb/s USB-C data ports: the front-left port is specified for up to 20 W, while the other two are specified for up to 7.5 W each. [C004F]

CalDigit distinguishes the TS4 Thunderbolt host connection from two downstream Thunderbolt connections; the support page rates host charging up to 98 W and each downstream Thunderbolt port up to 15 W. [C004G]

CalDigit describes the ordinary TS4 USB-C ports as data-only while separately specifying their power outputs; its monitor guidance uses the DisplayPort or suitable downstream Thunderbolt connections instead. [C004H]

Elgato 4K X uses one USB-C USB 3.2 Gen 2 host link for captured video. USB Gen 1 is documented with reduced available capture modes; codec, resolution, frame rate and software remain separate conditions. [C004I]

The ATEM Mini Pro ISO specification lists one USB Type-C 3.1 Gen 1 interface for external drive recording, webcam output, software control, updates and panel connection. [C004J]

USB-IF’s January 2026 cable guidance separates data performance from 60W/240W power markings. USB 2.0 Type-C cables can use power-only logos without a displayed data rate. [C004K]

USB-IF lists USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification Release 2.5 with the date 8 April 2026. The listing alone establishes neither a product’s implementation nor its supported functions. [C004L]

USB-IF states that a certified cable does not improve or add the capabilities of connected USB products. Its USB-C to USB-C cable program requires power-capability marking, with separate data-rate marking requirements for all but USB 2.0 High-Speed cable categories. Cable markings cannot establish a port's video output. [C004M]

VESA says DisplayPort Alt Mode support on a USB-C port may be indicated by a nearby DisplayPort logo, but a connector logo is not guaranteed to appear. Verify the exact port's documented DP Alt Mode support rather than inferring video from USB-C shape or absence of a mark. [C004N]

Molex specifies 1054500101 as a USB-C receptacle, 24 loaded circuits and 2 row(s), with mating-interface pitch 0.50mm. [C004W]

Decision map, not a plug drawing or electrical wiring diagram. The original connector specimen remains above; this sequence shows what needs proof after shape identification.

Four facts to keep separate

01
Form

USB Type-C names the reversible connector; it is not a standalone speed, video or charging specification. Evidence: C004A

02
Port role

Nikon identifies separate data and USB Power Delivery ports on the Z 8. The computer-transfer path is its data port. Evidence: C004D

03
Power / data

CalDigit documents data-oriented TS4 USB-C ports with different rated power outputs from its Thunderbolt ports. Evidence: C004F

04
Exact task

CalDigit directs monitor setup to the DisplayPort or suitable downstream Thunderbolt ports, not simply any Type-C opening. Evidence: C004H

Common wrong conclusion

“It charges, therefore it supports video” reverses the evidence: power behavior does not establish a display transport or mode.

What to check next

  1. Find the exact socket in the device manual, including whether it is upstream/host-facing.
  2. Match the cable’s documented data, power and video capabilities to the intended task.
  3. Verify each endpoint’s supported display mode or USB role; use a named product specification.
Why these statements are qualified · claim and source context

This is an original editorial decision study tied to existing source-checked claims. The following source inspections have not been renewed by this new page presentation, and none is independent engineering or model-by-model qualification.

  • S003 · USB-IFUSB Type-C is not USB performance; USB 2.0 Type-C cables section · source reviewed 2026-10-01 · Shape/performance distinction and absence of high-speed lanes in USB 2.0 Type-C cables.
  • S448 · NikonCopying Pictures to a Computer Using NX Studio, step 1; connecting cautions · source reviewed 2026-10-08 · Use the data connector; a computer does not detect a camera connected through its Power Delivery connector.
  • S449 · CalDigitPrinted page 10: USB 3.2 Type-C and Thunderbolt 4; diagrams inspected · source reviewed 2026-10-08 · Three ordinary USB-C data ports, 10 Gb/s interface and different power outputs; separate Thunderbolt host/downstream roles.
  • S064 · CalDigitThunderbolt 4/USB4 Ports; rear host port; display and host capability caveats · source reviewed 2026-10-01 · One upstream host and two downstream Thunderbolt connections in TS4. No blanket display or Ethernet promise.

Unresolved: Actual device fit, required physical tolerances, pinouts, negotiations, electrical safety and hardware interoperability still require the identified manufacturer's documentation and any necessary independent review.

Decision field guide 02 Independent lanes

USB-C is three separate evidence questions

Data, charging and display output depend on different declared port, cable and device capabilities. One supported lane does not certify the others.

Conceptual independent lanes decision path; steps and conditions appear in the text equivalent alongside. Illustration not to scale or a compatibility finding.
Original explanatory schematic · not to scale · read the exact source scope. Scroll horizontally on small screens.

Read the decision

  1. Data: verify actual USB capabilities and connection role at both endpoints.
  2. Power: verify the source, sink and cable requirements; a wattage printed on a cable is not a negotiated delivery result.
  3. Video: verify an implemented video transport such as the required Alternate Mode, plus downstream display conditions.

Still unknown: No lane is established by the presence of a USB-C socket or a cable marked “full-featured.”

V102Q01 Practical reference

Two USB-C sockets on a camera: which one transfers pictures?

Short answer Do not choose by connector shape. Nikon documents separate data and USB Power Delivery Type-C connectors on the Z 8; its computer-transfer instructions require the data connector.

Which distinction matters?
What you are checkingWhat the cited evidence establishes
USB data connectorZ 8 computer picture-transfer path
USB Power Delivery connectorThe Z 8 is not detected by a computer through this connector
Another device with Type-CRequires that exact device’s port-role documentation
Next checks, in order
  1. Identify the camera model and the exact labeled socket.
  2. Use the manufacturer’s computer-transfer instructions for that model and operating state.
  3. Check the computer-side data cable and application separately; a charging indicator does not prove a data connection.

Still unresolved: These Nikon instructions cannot establish the role of a different camera, dock, or Type-C socket.

Claim-level evidence, source locators and limits

Existing evidence claims: C004A · C004B · C004D · C004E. These are editorial field answers over inherited source records, not newly approved specifications.

Before you connect

Before you connect

What to check

  1. Check whether the exact device port supports the task: data, video and power are separate.
  2. Record the cable’s data rating and power rating independently.
  3. For a monitor, identify the supported video transport and specific display mode.
  4. A USB-C port that only supplies power is not evidence of a display output.

CalDigit describes the ordinary TS4 USB-C ports as data-only while separately specifying their power outputs; its monitor guidance uses the DisplayPort or suitable downstream Thunderbolt connections instead.

Claim scope: Here data-only separates display paths; it must not be paraphrased as no power. Exact host/display limits still require evidence.

Claim scope: USB-IF cable certification and logo-program requirement; not all sold cables are certified; exact product capabilities unknown

Does this USB-C port provide video, and does its cable allow it?

What the evidence saysUSB-C is a connector. A cable certification mark is not a guarantee that the connected device implements video output.

What is still unknown

The DP icon is an indication when present, not an always-present label. Nothing here proves the particular port supports DP Alt Mode, Thunderbolt video, a given monitor mode, or that a specific cable can carry it.

Check before proceeding

  1. Read the exact host port specification for DP Alt Mode or a named supported display output.
  2. Check the cable type and its documented data/power/video capability independently.
  3. Confirm the display input, adapter direction and requested display mode.
