USB question

Why does a USB-C cable charge but not carry a display?

Treat charging and display transport as separate capabilities instead of assuming one successful USB-C function proves every other function.

The answer

Short answer Charging and video are separate features; a cable or port can support power without display output.

Because power delivery and display transport are separate capability questions. A cable or port can have documented charging behavior while video support remains absent, conditional or unknown.

Why the simple answer is not enough

Keep the evidence layers separate

1Reasoning step

Confirm that the source port actually supports the required display transport, not merely USB-C charging.

2Reasoning step

Check the exact cable for video/alternate-mode or Thunderbolt support rather than inferring it from USB-C ends.

3Reasoning step

Verify the display-side input and any adapter or dock direction separately.

What to check next

  1. Source-port video capability
  2. Cable video capability
  3. Adapter/dock direction and conversion
  4. Display input/mode requirement

USB-IF’s cable-logo guidance conditions licensed logo use on program qualification and listing. Its cable guidance also states that a certified cable does not increase the capabilities of the connected host or device.

Claim scope: Program rules, not an authentication or certification verdict for a pictured or owned cable.

USB-IF’s public Product Search says members maintain the certified-product entries and the default display covers only the last two years; a date filter can expose older entries, which may not meet current program requirements.

Claim scope: Public search instructions only; no individual cable result or authenticated Integrators List was inspected.

VIA Labs describes its VL153 electronic marker as optimized for passive USB Type-C cables and supporting passive Thunderbolt 3/4 cables. This shows why electronic-marker presence alone does not establish signal-conditioning-active construction.

Claim scope: Manufacturer component application example, not identification of the electronics in any named cable assembly.

A USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable identifies two connector ends, but connector shape alone does not establish the cable's data generation, charging current, USB Power Delivery behavior or alternate-mode capability.

Claim scope: USB-A-to-USB-C cable-class identification and capability-separation principle only.

Apple documents its 1.8 m Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable as an active USB-C-ended Thunderbolt cable supporting represented Thunderbolt/USB/display modes and charging; those capabilities belong to this exact product, not to USB-C shape generally.

Claim scope: Exact Apple 1.8 m Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable only.

Apple’s Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable 1.8 m overview lists Thunderbolt 3/4 and USB4 up to 40 Gb/s, USB3 up to 10 Gb/s, DisplayPort HBR3 and charging up to 100W.

Claim scope: Exact named Apple 1.8 m product, manufacturer ceilings rather than guaranteed end-to-end rates or simultaneous maxima.

Apple explicitly labels the Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable 1.8 m as active. Its stated construction and length do not establish the construction or reach of another USB-C-ended cable.

Claim scope: Exact 1.8 m product. Electronic-marker details and a whole-cable certification registry match are not established by this inspection.

Apple documents its 1 m Thunderbolt 5 Pro Cable as a passive USB-C-ended Thunderbolt cable supporting represented Thunderbolt/USB/display modes and charging; those capabilities belong to this exact product, not to USB-C shape generally.

Claim scope: Exact Apple 1 m Thunderbolt 5 Pro Cable only.

Apple labels its Thunderbolt 5 Pro Cable 1 m passive and lists up to 240W charging, USB4 up to 80 Gb/s in the highlights, USB3 up to 10 Gb/s in the overview, and DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20.

Claim scope: Exact named 1 m product. Published ceilings do not guarantee a selected host, display or storage workload.

Apple’s Thunderbolt 5 cable overview groups Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 under an up-to-80-Gb/s phrase, while Intel’s comparison gives Thunderbolt 4 a 40-Gbit/s link. This grouped wording is not evidence that an older Thunderbolt host gains an 80-Gbit/s mode.

Claim scope: Unresolved scope of grouped manufacturer wording; do not distribute the largest number across every listed protocol or infer an undocumented revision explanation.

Apple advertises up to 120 Gb/s for its Thunderbolt 5 cable. Intel explains the technology’s high-display-bandwidth mode as 120 Gbit/s in one direction with 40 Gbit/s in the other, rather than a symmetric or measured storage-transfer rate.

Claim scope: Manufacturer cable advertisement interpreted with the technology brief; no actual negotiated link or workload was measured.
