Docks / hosts / monitors

One desk. Every display accounted for.

A source-aware planning desk for independent extended displays. Keep physical resources, operating conditions and unverified details visible.

Decision field guide 03 End-to-end

Trace every stage of the display path

A display chain is a sequence of roles and requirements. Adding a dock or converter introduces another evidence boundary.

Conceptual end-to-end decision path; steps and conditions appear in the text equivalent alongside. Illustration not to scale or a compatibility finding.
Original explanatory schematic · not to scale · read the exact source scope. Scroll horizontally on small screens.

Read the decision

  1. Start at a documented output on the actual host, including its video transport and operating conditions.
  2. Check the cable, dock and any converter in the correct order and direction.
  3. End at the display’s documented input; validate the complete mode and any shared-resource or software constraints.

Still unknown: A chain drawn with arrows is a checklist, not a measured throughput, resolution or multi-display guarantee.

ONE DESK, SEVERAL DISPLAYS

Count the paths.
Not just the ports.

Trace the host, the dock and every screen. Separate shared sockets, native displays and software-rendered paths before calling it a setup.

HOST LIMITS

The chip matters. So can the lid.

The selected M3 Air profile separates its open-lid limit from the second-display conditions.

SHARED OUTPUTS

Two sockets can spend one resource.

WD22TB4 HDMI/MFDP alternatives and hybrid dock output pairs stay linked in the allocation check.

SOFTWARE PATHS

A display engine is not just a plug.

DisplayLink runtime and macOS screen-access permissions remain explicit observations.
