Display question

DVI to VGA: when is a passive adapter not enough?

Separate access to a documented analog signal from conversion of a digital-only signal.

The answer

Short answer When the DVI port outputs only digital video. A passive adapter cannot create analog video; you need an active converter.

A passive adapter does not generate a missing analog video signal. First establish whether the exact DVI output supplies analog video; a digital-only output needs a suitable active conversion path to feed a VGA input.

Why the simple answer is not enough

Keep the evidence layers separate

1Reasoning step

The DDWG combined interface includes analog signals in C1–C5 and vertical sync at position 8. The digital-only interface omits the combined analog contact arrangement. Physical fit and documented signal implementation are separate checks.

2Reasoning step

Dell describes active conversion as involving processing circuitry and passive adaptation as not performing that processing. This guide adopts that distinction, not the article’s broad connector-pair conversion matrix.

3Reasoning step

A DVI-I-looking output is not sufficient evidence of a working analog output on an unknown product. Check the exact port’s manual. A passive arrangement is conditional on a source already providing the required signal.

4Reasoning step

For a powered converter, verify the documented input-to-output direction, power supply requirements and supported timing. A converter specified in the other direction is not an interchangeable cable.

Scroll horizontally on narrow screens. This is a documentation checklist, not a wiring procedure, product recommendation or compatibility guarantee. No universal resolution limit is asserted.

What to check next

  1. Record source and display models and their actual input/output roles.
  2. Confirm analog output support rather than assuming it from connector shape.
  3. Find an exact converter’s direction, power and timing documentation when conversion is needed.
  4. Do not force mismatched analog contacts into a digital-only opening.
