PCI Express x16 164-position card-edge connector

A PCI Express x16 card-edge connector uses a 164-position mating interface in the documented Amphenol implementation.

Also called PCIe x16 PCI Express x16 slot 164-position PCIe x16 card edge

The x16 mechanical form does not by itself establish PCIe generation, active lane width, power budget or platform support.

Look for

Confirm the x16 card-edge form and then verify motherboard/device documentation for generation, lane wiring, bifurcation and power behavior.

Claim inspection dates: 2026-10-06, 2026-10-08 · Independent review pending

INTERNAL SYSTEMS / EXPANSION

A full-length PCIe x16 slot may not be electrically x16

No. PCI-SIG’s CEM family distinguishes connector/card mechanical widths from the separately implemented host link, and an existing ASUS motherboard manual documents real model-specific slot and population conditions. The slot shell alone does not establish usable PCIe lanes, generation, shared chipset resources or firmware support.

Conceptual role comparison: Mechanical card-edge width versus Live motherboard wiring. Check exact board slot tables and populated-card configuration. Not to scale, no pinout or mechanical mating dimensions.
Slot length vs enabled link. Original qualitative role diagram; not mechanical artwork, not to scale or a wiring map. Source context S281 · S429.

Three checks before proceeding

  1. Read the exact motherboard model’s slot lane tables, CPU dependence and sharing notes.
  2. Confirm the add-in card’s connector, required link width and firmware restrictions.
  3. Check the actual negotiated link in reliable system diagnostics after installation.

One mistake to avoid

Selling a full-length slot as “x16 bandwidth” without reading the board manual and populated-slot constraints.

Claim-specific evidence remains in the canonical record. Concept diagrams do not show any safe wiring or mechanical mating geometry.

SLOT / TOP VIEW

Unlike the inherited symbol, this diagram shows a receptacle channel, shared key separator and trailing-length distinction. It is not to scale and does not show contact mapping.

PCIe x16 (164-position) slot: top-view keyed PCIe expansion-slot schematic with visible short leading section and variant-length trailing section. Not a pinout or measured geometry.
Top-facing conceptual slot opening; not the add-in card edge, a rear solder view, or an insertion instruction.

Look for

Longest of these four typical keyed expansion-slot formats.

Nominal position class: 164 positions. The marks and proportions in this drawing are not pins or mechanical dimensions.

Keep the host-specific question open

Source-supported family key and position-class recognition. Stylized channel; hatching is not the contact arrangement, and there are no real tolerances, pins or measured dimensions.

A physical slot class does not prove its electrical lane wiring, generation or available power.

V106N04 / host storageDevice qualification required

Why does a full-length PCIe x16 slot run a card at x4 or x1?

Field answerA physically x16 card-edge socket does not establish its wired lane count. Amphenol identifies an x16-shaped 164-position part; a different ASUS board-specific manual describes an x16-length chipset slot that works at x4, or drops to x1 under specified slot-population conditions.

Conceptual storage path: host board and controller, exact connector or cable ends, transport support, and storage endpoint must each be checked independently.
Interpretation study, not a wiring or mating diagram. In order: Identify the board/controller and the specific socket label. / Trace the documented cable ends and the intended interface or lanes. / Confirm the device, power and mode; physical fit is not qualification. This is not evidence of a working connection.

Four checks that must stay separate

Card edge shapeAmphenol part 10146067-113A0LF is a PCIe x16 connector body; this does not tell you an installed motherboard’s wiring.
Lanes actually routedASUS PRIME B550-PLUS AC-HES has a named chipset x16_4 slot whose documented mode depends on other occupied slots.
Generation, cards and firmwareElectrical speed, lane negotiation, bifurcation, physical clearance and supported add-in cards are separate named-host questions.
Manufacturer scopeS281 applies to one connector product; S429 applies to the AC-HES board variant, not every ASUS B550 or PCIe slot.

Check next, in this order

  1. Identify the exact motherboard revision and slot identifier in its own manual.
  2. Read the lane-sharing or slot-population table and record other cards installed before changes.
  3. Confirm card requirements, active negotiated link details and any BIOS/firmware limitation with the actual host vendor.

Not yet established The inherited board example does not establish the wiring, negotiated mode, lane bifurcation, physical clearance or performance of another board or a particular card.

The useful distinction

Recognize it. Then verify it.

A PCI Express x16 card-edge connector uses a 164-position mating interface in the documented Amphenol implementation. [C261A]

The AC-HES manual distinguishes physical x16 slots from wired modes: the chipset PCIe 3.0 x16_4 slot supports x4 mode, falling to x1 when any of the specified x16_2, x16_3 or x16_5 slots is occupied. [C261C]

What to check

  1. Identify the exact connector family and variant from the equipment or cable documentation.
  2. Keep shape, contact count, protocol, electrical rating and device support as separate facts.
  3. Do not force, rewire or adapt a connector from this recognition record; resolve the remaining requirements first.

  • P261 PCIe x16 — **Partial; reference-clock conflict remains** — A's 3M Gen 5 extender and B's PICMG design-guide connector-symbol assignments agree on lane/contact placement after three transcription corrections described below. B distinguishes connector-symbol polarity from deliberately inverted module-side nets; PICMG permits data-lane inversion. A13/A14 clock polarity remains unverified in B because PICMG and Mellanox disagree; data-lane inversion does not settle a clock conflict. Modern 3M CLKREQ#/PWRBRK#/MFG/NC assignments differ from older guide reserved labels at B12/B30/A19 and other positions. Different documents; no universal revision-independent map.
  • All grounds tied together in PCBs, per drawing. This Gen 5 product includes MFG/CLKREQ#/PWRBRK#; older reserved assignments are not silently updated.

PICMG design-guide x16 reference slot

View and evidence limits

Source schematic contact identities A1-A82 / B1-B82. The two columns are schematic symbol sides, not a verified mating-face or solder-side view.

  • P261 PCIe x16 — **Partial; reference-clock conflict remains** — A's 3M Gen 5 extender and B's PICMG design-guide connector-symbol assignments agree on lane/contact placement after three transcription corrections described below. B distinguishes connector-symbol polarity from deliberately inverted module-side nets; PICMG permits data-lane inversion. A13/A14 clock polarity remains unverified in B because PICMG and Mellanox disagree; data-lane inversion does not settle a clock conflict. Modern 3M CLKREQ#/PWRBRK#/MFG/NC assignments differ from older guide reserved labels at B12/B30/A19 and other positions. Different documents; no universal revision-independent map.
  • This design guide is explicitly not a substitute for the PCI-SIG Card Electromechanical specification. No mechanical footprint or board mirror is supplied here.
  • A13/A14 reference-clock polarity conflicts between the PICMG guide and Mellanox manual remain unverified.
  • This is a source-scoped research map; PCI-SIG CEM normative revisions, later sideband assignments, exact card-side orientation and PCB termination mirrors were not independently established.

What is not established

This field note does not approve a connection, adapter, cable assembly, rewiring scheme or fabricated part. It intentionally omits unsupported pin assignments and mechanical tolerances.

A full-length slot need not have sixteen wired lanes

Keep the physical connector description separate from its host implementation. The AC-HES motherboard example documents narrower lane modes and a further slot-population condition; the generic connector does not determine those modes.

The AC-HES manual distinguishes physical x16 slots from wired modes: the chipset PCIe 3.0 x16_4 slot supports x4 mode, falling to x1 when any of the specified x16_2, x16_3 or x16_5 slots is occupied.
