Storage and memory cards question

Why can installing M.2 disable SATA ports or change PCIe lanes?

Use one exact motherboard manual to separate connector shape from CPU wiring and shared resources.

The answer

Short answer Motherboards share resources between slots. Your board’s manual lists which ports switch off when an M.2 slot is used.

A motherboard can share resources between connectors. On ASUS PRIME B550-PLUS AC-HES, the cited manual says populating M.2_2 disables SATA6G_56. It separately documents a physical x16 slot with narrower wired modes. Check the exact board, CPU, slot label and population rules—not just the connector shape.

Why the simple answer is not enough

Keep the evidence layers separate

1Reasoning step

This is the AC-HES model, not every ASUS board, every B550 board or the similarly named PRIME B550-PLUS without that suffix.

2Reasoning step

The SATA-sharing note says when M.2_2 is populated. It is not limited in that note to installing a SATA-mode module, so this reference does not add that unsupported exception.

3Reasoning step

The M.2_1 interface generation depends on the processor families named in the manual. M.2_2 has its own chipset-connected specification; visually similar M-key slots need not have the same implementation.

4Reasoning step

The chipset x16_4 slot has a documented x4 mode and a further x1 condition when any specified x16_2/3/5 slot is occupied. That is a different rule from M.2_2 sharing SATA6G_56.

Exact-host example: PRIME B550-PLUS AC-HES, E18712

Scroll horizontally on narrow screens. Manual evidence only. No BIOS refresh, hardware measurement or installation approval is claimed.

What to check next

  1. Confirm the full board model including AC-HES or any other suffix.
  2. Find the exact slot and port labels in the correct manual revision.
  3. Read CPU-family and slot-population conditions, keeping separate sharing rules separate.
  4. Check intended boot/data use and firmware, then follow the service procedure before moving drives or cards.
