PORT & CABLE / KNOW WHAT CONNECTS.
FIELD SHEET 02 — 02 / STORAGE CABLING / SOURCE-SCOPED REFERENCE
Data is not power.
A SATA drive has a data cable attached. Why is it still not powered?
A seven-contact SATA data connection and a separate 15-position SATA power form serve different roles. A connected data cable by itself does not supply drive power.
Not yet verified. A data connection is not evidence that the drive is supplied with approved power.
Four evidence layers
- 01 / Data form
- StarTech SATA18 is a named seven-contact SATA data cable example.
- 02 / Power form
- Molex documents the separate SATA storage connector system; the referenced power form has 15 positions.
- 03 / Complete equipment
- Drive and enclosure/backplane designs may differ; use the actual model and its approved power arrangement.
- 04 / Evidence limit
- A cable datasheet is not a PSU schematic, voltage rating for your setup or authorization to modify power wiring.
Check in order
- Identify the exact drive and whether it uses distinct data/power ports or an enclosure backplane.
- Consult the OEM instructions for an approved power-off inspection and power supply connection.
- Only after both documented paths are established, troubleshoot host detection and drive status.
No PSU capacity, voltage-rail map, adapter pinout, safe hot-plug procedure or diagnosis of this drive is provided.
What would resolve this?
Not yet verified. A data connection is not evidence that the drive is supplied with approved power.
Record these model-specific facts before making a decision:
- Drive and enclosure/backplane model
- Documented SATA data path
- Manufacturer-approved power path for that installation
If a required model-specific source is missing, leave compatibility unknown. Never substitute connector appearance, this illustration or the print sheet for product documentation.
