Display question

Why can a DisplayPort/HDMI adapter work only one direction?

Treat source/sink direction and active/passive conversion as evidence questions rather than assuming a reversible physical path.

The answer

Short answer Because the conversion inside works one way; use an adapter documented for your direction.

Because the physical connector pair does not make a conversion electrically or logically reversible. Direction, conversion class and source/sink roles have to match the represented adapter and devices.

DisplayPort connector — front-oriented outline; role not specified; original, not-to-scale identification schematic; drawing review pending
DisplayPort connectorOriginal identification schematic · not to scale · review pending

Why the simple answer is not enough

Keep the evidence layers separate

1Reasoning step

Confirm which side is the source and which side is the display/input.

2Reasoning step

Check whether the represented adapter is active, passive or unspecified rather than assuming reversibility.

3Reasoning step

Verify the required source feature or conversion behavior on the exact products.

What to check next

  1. Source and sink roles
  2. Adapter direction
  3. Active/passive conversion evidence
  4. Exact source/display support
