Storage and memory cards question

Are Mini PCIe, mSATA and M.2 the same connector?

Distinguish a shared socket outline from its electrical role, then separate both from M.2.

The answer

Short answer No. Mini PCIe and mSATA share a socket shape but differ in interface, and M.2 is a different connector.

No. A documented Mini PCIe/mSATA socket example does not make those host interfaces interchangeable. Kingston also distinguishes mSATA from M.2: mSATA uses SATA, while M.2 can use SATA or PCIe and has a different physical connector.

Why the simple answer is not enough

Keep the evidence layers separate

1Reasoning step

The existing TE 52-position socket reference is a specific mechanical product example. It does not determine how every motherboard wires a similar-looking socket.

2Reasoning step

mSATA and M.2 are not two spellings for one physical interface. A drive using SATA can still have a different module form and counterpart.

3Reasoning step

Do not choose a replacement only by the card’s apparent outline, screw location or number of notches. Obtain the exact host slot and module identifiers.

4Reasoning step

An adapter needs its own interface requirements. A mechanical conversion cannot be assumed to translate unsupported signals or add firmware support.

Scroll horizontally on narrow screens. Each row is source-scoped. Matching appearance is not a compatibility verdict.

What to check next

  1. Identify whether the host documentation says Mini PCIe, mSATA or M.2.
  2. Check the documented socket signals rather than inferring them from its outline.
  3. Match the module’s interface and mounting to that exact host.
  4. For an adapter, verify both endpoints and any documented conversion; do not trial-fit an unidentified card.
