HD Audio front-panel header — keyed 2×5 (Intel example)

Intel’s Thin Mini-ITX front-panel audio example uses a 2×5 header at 2.54 mm nominal pitch with absent position 8, unlike the pin-9-keyed USB 2.0 example.

Also called HD AUDIO header AAFP motherboard header 10-1 front-panel audio front panel audio 2x5

Do not identify an audio header by a 2×5 outline alone; even similarly keyed HD-audio implementations can use different pitches.

Look for

Look for HD_AUDIO or front-audio marking and the motherboard manual’s key location; confirm connector width and pitch rather than guessing.

Front HD Audio’s example key is different from the USB2 key

No. Intel’s documented front-panel HD Audio 2×5 header example has position 8 absent, whereas its Thin Mini-ITX USB2 example has position 9 absent. The electrical signals also serve entirely different purposes; the geometry alone does not grant safe cross-use.

Conceptual role comparison: USB 2.0 front-panel example versus HD Audio front-panel example. Different signals and manufacturer-specific assignments; never force. Not to scale, no pinout or mechanical mating dimensions.
Look-alike motherboard keys. Original qualitative role diagram; not mechanical artwork, not to scale or a wiring map. Source context S456 · S457.

Three checks before proceeding

  1. Verify the motherboard’s AAFP/F_AUDIO/HD_AUDIO header diagram.
  2. Identify the actual front-panel chassis connector and orientation.
  3. Use the board maker’s guidance for any AC’97 legacy variant.

One mistake to avoid

Forcing a chassis HD AUDIO cable onto a USB header or using old AC’97 pin expectations automatically.

Claim-specific evidence remains in the canonical record. Concept diagrams do not show any safe wiring or mechanical mating geometry.

The useful distinction

Recognize it. Then verify it.

Intel’s Thin Mini-ITX front-panel audio example uses a 2×5 header at 2.54 mm nominal pitch with absent position 8, unlike the pin-9-keyed USB 2.0 example. [C346A]

Intel NUC 9 documentation separately specifies a similar 2×5 audio header with the same position 8 absent but a 2.0 mm pitch: the exact platform matters. [C346B]

B550-A PRO identifies JAUD1 as the front-panel audio-jack connector. [C346C]

JAUD1’s table distinguishes absent position 8 from unconnected position 4. [C346D]

The JAUD1 table includes microphone/headphone detection functions; it is not a USB signal table. [C346E]

Disconnect mains power before examining an internal header; find its exact model-specific location and label. Confirm nominal pitch and absent-key position in the current board manual; do not assume all HD Audio headers are 2.54 mm. Verify the chassis audio cable and board compatibility; do not confuse it with USB 2.0 or proprietary audio pinouts.
