FIELD GUIDESource-led reference

Fiber question

How do I read a fiber patch-cable label?

Separate connector ends, each end’s polish, fiber category, fiber count and path mapping before checking the equipment.

The answer

Short answer Read the connector on each end first, then polish, fiber type (such as OM4 or OS2), simplex or duplex, and polarity.

Read the two connector ends first, then each end’s polish, fiber category, simplex/duplex organization and polarity. LC–LC does not settle these other fields: the documented Corning OM4 and OS2 examples use the same connector family but have different optical descriptions.

Why the simple answer is not enough

Keep the evidence layers separate

1Reasoning step

A connector-family name and a polish label are different fields. The cited OM4 Jumper in a Box option is labeled LC PC; it is not silently relabeled UPC.

2Reasoning step

The Corning reverse-polarity uniboot example is LC UPC at both ends with two OS2 fibers. Its factory mapping is a separate documented field.

3Reasoning step

The Vericom simplex cord has LC UPC at one end and SC APC at the other. Those are separate mating joints, not permission to mate UPC directly to APC.

4Reasoning step

A series pattern is not an inspected sample or a selected order code. No supported reach, measured loss, cleanliness or transceiver compatibility is supplied by these labels.

Scroll horizontally on narrow screens. These are documented product-family examples, not a verdict about the cable, adapter or equipment in front of you.

What to check next

  1. Read both actual connector-end labels; do not infer polish from shell color alone.
  2. Verify the fiber category and one-fiber/two-fiber construction in the exact cable documentation.
  3. For a two-fiber path, verify the complete transmit-to-receive mapping and any field polarity change.
  4. Match each joint and the exact equipment specifications. Never look into a live fiber or port.
