Storage and memory cards question

Does M.2 2242 or 2280 tell me whether a drive will fit?

Decode nominal module sizes without turning a format code into a mating drawing or clearance guarantee.

The answer

Short answer Partly. The numbers give the size (22 × 42 mm or 22 × 80 mm); the slot must also match the key, mounting point and interface.

Only part of the fit. Dell’s examples label 2242 as nominally 22 × 42 mm and 2280 as 22 × 80 mm. The exact host still has to support the key, mounting location, component clearance and interface.

Why the simple answer is not enough

Keep the evidence layers separate

1Reasoning step

The two numeric examples describe the module outline. They are not socket pin pitch, a cutout, a tolerance or a distance you should measure from the identification artwork.

2Reasoning step

The standoff must be appropriate for the supported module length. A physically longer module cannot be assumed to fit because its key looks right.

3Reasoning step

Single- and double-sided component layouts can require different clearance. This reference deliberately publishes no generic component-height or heat-spreader allowance.

4Reasoning step

Supported sizes are host-specific. The named AC-HES manual lists 2242/2260/2280/22110 for both M.2 slots; that list is not a promise about other machines.

What to check next

  1. Read the drive’s full format and key designation.
  2. Read the exact host slot’s supported size list and installation procedure.
  3. Inspect documented standoff position and clearance without trial-fitting a powered device.
  4. Check the interface and firmware separately from the nominal length.
