SD capacity classes: SD, SDHC, SDXC and SDUC

The SD Association defines SD up to 2 GB, SDHC above 2 GB through 32 GB, SDXC above 32 GB through 2 TB, and SDUC above 2 TB through 128 TB. These are capacity families, not speed ratings.

Also called SDHC SDXC SDUC SD capacity

Capacity family is not the write-speed class.

The useful distinction

Look for the complete SD family label in the host manual and on the card, not just a capacity number.

The useful distinction

Understand the requirement.

The SD Association defines SD up to 2 GB, SDHC above 2 GB through 32 GB, SDXC above 32 GB through 2 TB, and SDUC above 2 TB through 128 TB. These are capacity families, not speed ratings. [C068A]

The SDA capacity classes are SD up to 2 GB, SDHC above 2 GB through 32 GB, SDXC above 32 GB through 2 TB, and SDUC above 2 TB through 128 TB. The standard file-system associations are FAT12/16, FAT32, exFAT and exFAT respectively. [C068B]

No host or reader is automatically compatible because the card fits. No formatting or data-recovery operation is performed.

Before you connect

What to check

  1. Match the capacity family accepted by the exact host.
  2. Record the host maximum capacity separately from the family maximum.
  3. Check bus interface and minimum speed class independently.
  4. Preserve files before following any manufacturer formatting guidance.

Keep a complete card requirement

Record form factor, capacity family, bus interface and recording class. A shopping checklist that omits one of these leaves an important requirement unresolved.
