Audio question

Is Mini-TOSLINK the same as a 3.5 mm headphone plug?

Similar size is not a signal specification; check the exact socket’s documented role.

The answer

Short answer No. Mini-TOSLINK is optical and a 3.5 mm headphone plug is electrical. Some sockets accept both, but not all.

No. Optical miniplugs and metal-contact analog plugs describe different signal paths. Some named devices combine roles in one opening, but a 3.5 mm socket is not automatically optical.

Why the simple answer is not enough

Keep the evidence layers separate

1Reasoning step

Apple’s general port guide distinguishes an analog metal plug from an optical plug and discusses optical input on some Macs. That is not a statement that every Mac headphone output is optical.

2Reasoning step

Google explicitly documents analog and optical digital output for Chromecast Audio. Apple’s Early 2015 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro specification instead uses the wording digital/analog line out. Keep those source statements distinct.

3Reasoning step

Do not infer optical input, simultaneous output, microphone wiring or support on later model generations from these examples. A device absent from this table is unresearched here, not necessarily incompatible.

Scroll horizontally on narrow screens. These are source-scoped examples, not newly added complete device profiles or a compatibility list.

What to check next

  1. Find the exact model and generation.
  2. Check whether the socket is described as optical input, optical output or analog only.
  3. Match the optical cable form and receiving device mode separately.
