USB question

Which CalDigit TS4 USB-C ports are for data, power or a display?

Keep the ordinary USB-C data group separate from the host and downstream Thunderbolt connections.

The answer

Short answer The ordinary USB-C ports carry data and have their own power ratings, while the Thunderbolt ports have different roles. Check CalDigit’s port table for display output.

The TS4’s USB-C outline is shared by ordinary USB data ports and Thunderbolt connections with different roles. CalDigit’s data-only wording for the ordinary USB-C ports does not mean no power: their power ratings are documented separately. Display connections belong to the manufacturer’s DisplayPort/Thunderbolt guidance, not a shape-only USB-C assumption.

Why the simple answer is not enough

Keep the evidence layers separate

1Reasoning step

The ordinary USB-C group has three ports, documented at up to 10 Gb/s. The manual identifies its front-left port as up to 20 W and the other two as up to 7.5 W each.

2Reasoning step

One Thunderbolt connection is the host connection; two are downstream. The published host/upstream charging rating and downstream ratings are not interchangeable.

3Reasoning step

CalDigit lists up to 98 W for the host connection and up to 15 W for each downstream Thunderbolt port. Those are documented ratings, not a measured or negotiated outcome.

4Reasoning step

The inherited usb-c group still represents all three ordinary sockets. It has not been renamed into one socket or counted again as extra groups.

What to check next

  1. Confirm TS4, not TS3 Plus, TS5 or TS5 Plus.
  2. Identify host versus downstream before choosing a Thunderbolt socket.
  3. Read the exact ordinary USB-C port’s power label against the manual.
  4. For video, check the documented display path, host and display mode separately.
