The jack does not tell you the job.
Is this eight-contact modular jack Ethernet, a serial console, or a PoE port?
An 8P8C modular shape is only a connector clue. A manufacturer documents an RJ45-ended serial console cable that does not provide Ethernet; PoE is a separately documented capability of the precise Ethernet equipment and port.

- TE describes a family of eight-position modular plugs and jacks.
- 02 / Port function
- Cable Matters makes a named USB-to-RJ45 serial console cable; its RJ45 end is not a LAN interface.
- 03 / Power feature
- PoE source/device roles and electrical support require exact-model specifications.
- 04 / Evidence limit
- No unidentified jack’s PHY, console pinout or power rating can be established visually.
Check in order
- Find the equipment model and port label (LAN, management, console) in the manual.
- Choose an explicitly supported Ethernet patch, management console or adapter path.
- If power is involved, check published exact-port PoE source/device support; never try an unknown powered lead.
Unidentified port function, serial wiring, PHY, PoE voltage, power direction or live-network behavior remain unknown.

- Required cable/adapter and documented power conditions
