Audio question

Why can a TOSLINK cable fit an ADAT port but not produce sound?

Connector fit does not select the receiver’s digital mode or supply a missing audio decoder.

The answer

Short answer The format must match: some optical inputs accept only ADAT, others S/PDIF.

An optical connection still needs matching formats. Focusrite documents ADAT-only optical inputs on older Scarlett generations and an optical S/PDIF mode on specified later models.

Why the simple answer is not enough

Keep the evidence layers separate

1Reasoning step

Use the exact interface generation and current operating mode, not just the optical socket shape. The examples below are deliberately limited to the devices in the cited Focusrite article.

2Reasoning step

For its described TV/console setup, Focusrite specifies linear PCM and says its interfaces cannot decode DTS or Dolby Digital. That receiver limitation does not mean an optical cable can never carry encoded audio.

3Reasoning step

Check both manuals for format, clocking and supported sample rate. Do not replace these checks with a universal TOSLINK channel-count or speed ceiling, and do not assume a form adapter converts ADAT to S/PDIF.

Scroll horizontally on narrow screens. This is not a general limitation on all optical receivers, TOSLINK cables or audio interfaces.

What to check next

  1. Identify the exact source and receiver models and generations.
  2. Compare the configured optical formats at both ends.
  3. Check decoding, clocking and sample-rate requirements in those manuals.
