USB question

Does a 120 Gbps Thunderbolt 5 cable mean 120 Gbps both ways?

Keep balanced links, display-driven bandwidth boost and application throughput separate.

The answer

Short answer No. It is 80 Gbps each way, or 120 Gbps one way and 40 the other for display-heavy use.

No. Intel describes an 80/80 Gbit/s balanced Thunderbolt 5 link and a display-driven 120/40 Gbit/s arrangement. The 120 figure is not symmetric in both directions and is not a measured file-transfer rate. A cable advertisement does not upgrade the host, device or selected workload.

USB Type-CComputer-generated illustration, not a photograph

Why the simple answer is not enough

Keep the evidence layers separate

1Reasoning step

The technology brief explains that bandwidth can be rebalanced for high display traffic. Read both directions, not only the larger headline number.

2Reasoning step

Apple’s 1 m Thunderbolt 5 cable separately documents passive construction, up to 240 W power, USB 4 up to 80 Gb/s in its highlights, and DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR 20. These are not one combined performance promise.

3Reasoning step

The overview also groups Thunderbolt 3/4 and USB 4 under an 80 Gb/s phrase. Intel’s comparison lists Thunderbolt 4 at 40 Gbit/s. This reference leaves the grouped wording unresolved rather than assigning 80 Gb/s to older Thunderbolt hosts.

4Reasoning step

Use the exact endpoint and cable requirements for the desired mode. No hardware sample, negotiated mode, display timing or storage benchmark was tested.

What to check next

  1. Identify the host and peripheral generations.
  2. Separate balanced and display-boost directions.
  3. Treat USB 4 and older Thunderbolt statements individually.
  4. Do not turn link capacity into a predicted file-copy result.
