USB question

Which Nikon Z 8 USB-C socket is for data, and which is for power?

The two USB-C sockets have different documented jobs; computer detection and camera power are not interchangeable.

The answer

Short answer Use the USB data connector for transfers and the separate USB Power Delivery connector for power.

The Z 8 has one USB data connector and a separate USB Power Delivery connector. Nikon’s computer-transfer instructions require the data connector; the computer will not detect the camera through the power connector. Conversely, the camera does not draw operating power through the data connector.

Why the simple answer is not enough

Keep the evidence layers separate

1Reasoning step

Use Nikon’s named connector labels, rather than assigning capabilities from the two matching USB-C outlines. This reference does not infer a top/bottom location.

2Reasoning step

Operating power requires a battery in the camera. The Power Delivery menu setting and camera state determine how external power is used.

3Reasoning step

Battery charging is a distinct case, with EN-EL15c/b and connection conditions in Nikon’s table. Do not turn a power connection into a simultaneous-charging promise.

4Reasoning step

This is the Z 8 body, not a Z 9, Z 6 variant or an optional battery pack. The earlier card-slot evidence remains separately scoped.

What to check next

  1. Confirm the exact camera model and connector label.
  2. For computer transfer, follow Nikon’s data-connector instructions and connection cautions.
  3. For power, check the battery, power source, cable, menu setting and operating state.
  4. Keep charging, data transfer and hardware testing as separate questions.
