Storage and memory cards question

Is CFexpress Type A or B the same as its generation?

Separate the physical type, specification generation, protocol and exact equipment support.

The answer

Short answer No. Type A or B is the card’s physical form; a version such as 4.0 is its specification generation.

No. Type A and Type B name different CFexpress forms and lane arrangements; a version such as CFexpress 4.0 identifies a specification generation. The same type can span generations, so the type letter alone does not establish a card’s performance or the modes supported by a camera or reader.

Why the simple answer is not enough

Keep the evidence layers separate

1Reasoning step

CFA describes Type A with one PCIe lane and Type B with two. This is a form/interface distinction, not a comparison of two measured products.

2Reasoning step

CFA’s CFexpress 4.0 announcement specifies PCIe Gen4 and NVMe 1.4c while retaining the existing CFexpress form factors. A 4.0 label does not create a new Type A or Type B shape.

3Reasoning step

Backward-compatibility language for the specification does not replace the exact camera, firmware, reader and card documentation. It is not permission to substitute Type A for Type B.

4Reasoning step

Do not rank two real cards only by their type letters. Their generations, sustained-write qualifications and the host path must also be established.

What to check next

  1. Read the physical type and specification generation separately on the exact product.
  2. Check the camera or reader’s supported card type and firmware conditions.
  3. Check any required recording-mode sustained-write class rather than only a peak-read number.
  4. Treat an adapter as a separate named product with its own supported combinations.
