Six optical-network choices: module, DAC, AOC and breakout

Choose the exact port-supported assembly and media. A matching SFP/QSFP envelope does not establish rate, vendor coding, optical budget, thermal support or breakout configuration.

Applies to: Six exact Cisco product examples from2026-10-06 datasheets; selection education only, no universal switch/server compatibility.

Power and temperature follow the exact SKU

COM/industrial ratings, power budgets and host density limits must match the exact module and supported port. Follow vendor platform/software compatibility handoffs; do not approve an unknown switch merely because the module inserts.

Breakout is a port mode as well as a cable

The four branch labels identify lanes, not four arbitrary independently compatible networks. Exact platform/OS breakout and FEC/rate support is a prerequisite; a cable cannot create an unsupported host mode.

Worked documentary examples

Cisco SFP-10G-SR: discrete short-reach optic

Documented outcome: Source-scoped selection example, host compatibility still to verify

  • 10GBASE-SR;850nm MMF; OM3up-to300m or OM4up-to400m;1WCOM table rating.
  1. Use matching optic/media and duplex path; a common SFP+host form does not approve vendor coding or software support.
  2. Check vendor compatibility matrix, software, port rate/FEC where specified, and module power/thermal budget before selection.
  3. Use safe external observations and OEM optical handling; do not look into optical ports.

Cisco SFP-10G-LR: single-mode link

Documented outcome: Source-scoped selection example, host compatibility still to verify

  • 10GBASE-LR;1310nm G.652SMF up-to10km;1WCOM table rating.
  1. Do not substitute SR/MMF solely because network-facing plugs look alike. Check exact loss budget and supported host table.
  2. Check vendor compatibility matrix, software, port rate/FEC where specified, and module power/thermal budget before selection.
  3. Use safe external observations and OEM optical handling; do not look into optical ports.

Cisco SFP-H10GB-CU1M: passive copper DAC

Documented outcome: Source-scoped selection example, host compatibility still to verify

  • 10G SFP+ passive twinax assembly,1m;0.1WCOM table rating; no optical wavelength or detachable fiber.
  1. Both end hosts must support the exact DAC SKU/length/rate; passive cable support does not imply active-cable support.
  2. Check vendor compatibility matrix, software, port rate/FEC where specified, and module power/thermal budget before selection.
  3. Use safe external observations and OEM optical handling; do not look into optical ports.

Cisco SFP-10G-AOC7M: integrated optical cable

Documented outcome: Source-scoped selection example, host compatibility still to verify

  • 10G SFP+ active optical cable,7m;1WCOM table rating; cable and end optics are one assembly.
  1. Match exact AOC-supported ports and software; do not treat it as a detachable patch lead plus interchangeable transceivers.
  2. Check vendor compatibility matrix, software, port rate/FEC where specified, and module power/thermal budget before selection.
  3. Use safe external observations and OEM optical handling; do not look into optical ports.

Cisco QSFP-100G-SR4-S: parallel optics

Documented outcome: Source-scoped selection example, host compatibility still to verify

  • 100GBASE-SR4;850nm MMF;MPO-12; up-to70mOM3/100mOM4;3.5W source rating.
  1. Match fiber polarity/lane map and exact host module/OS support. An MPO12body does not establish every lane arrangement.
  2. Check vendor compatibility matrix, software, port rate/FEC where specified, and module power/thermal budget before selection.
  3. Use safe external observations and OEM optical handling; do not look into optical ports.

Cisco QSFP-4SFP25-CU3M:100G-to-four25G DAC

Documented outcome: Source-scoped selection example, host compatibility still to verify

  • Passive copper breakout,3m;100GQSFPend → four25GSFPends. Table5places breakout1mfrom100Gend; wavelength not applicable.
  1. Use only a host port/platform/OS explicitly supporting4×25Gbreakout, correct lane labels and peer rates. Physical fanout alone does not configure breakout; host power/thermal support must be checked.
  2. Check vendor compatibility matrix, software, port rate/FEC where specified, and module power/thermal budget before selection.
  3. Use safe external observations and OEM optical handling; do not look into optical ports.

Your next useful observation

Record both host/port/OS identities, exact module/cable SKU, media/polarity/loss budget and target rate.

Keep these limits

  • No optical power/link test, DOM reading or vendor-interoperability validation.
  • Reach is source-defined under media/loss conditions, not a guaranteed installed link.
