Observation lesson

Count positions and populated contacts separately

A position is an intended location in the connector pattern. A populated contact is a conductive element actually present. Count both and record deliberate gaps.

Applies to: Disconnected observation and interpretation of source-scoped examples. Exercises are illustrative arithmetic, not specimen measurements.

Worked source example

JST XHP-2(10.0)-U uses a five-position span with three positions resin-filled; its two available circuits have 10.0 mm spacing. This named exception does not change ordinary XH pitch.

Try this observation

On a disconnected four-position pattern with position 3 absent, report “four positions, three populated contacts, gap at position 3”. Do not renumber the three contacts.

Your next useful observation

Obtain a square-on disconnected view showing the full position span.

Keep these limits

  • A matching candidate is not confirmed identity or compatibility. Do not probe energized contacts or infer geometry from an illustration.
