Observation lesson

Measure pitch across intervals, with a named axis

Pitch follows repeated contact centres along one row. Row spacing crosses between rows. Body width measures the housing. Label the endpoints and axis before recording a number.

Applies to: Disconnected observation and interpretation of source-scoped examples. Exercises are illustrative arithmetic, not specimen measurements.

Worked source example

Illustrative exercise, not a specimen measurement: contact centres 1–6 span 10.0 mm, so five intervals give 10.0 ÷ 5 = 2.0 mm pitch. Six contacts do not make six intervals. If the span is 10.0 ± 0.2 mm, division gives ± 0.04 mm for this reading; it is not a manufacturer tolerance.

Try this observation

For five intervals, 10.0 mm suggests 2.0 mm while 12.5 mm suggests 2.5 mm. For one short gap, perspective and tool uncertainty may hide that distinction. Repeat across the longest visible span with the camera/tool square to the row.

Your next useful observation

Record the number of intervals, span, unit, axis and estimated reading uncertainty.

Keep these limits

  • A matching candidate is not confirmed identity or compatibility. Do not probe energized contacts or infer geometry from an illustration.
