Choose the switching function before the connector

Decide whether you need to change computers, share USB peripherals, choose one picture, duplicate one picture, route several pictures, or extend distance. Those are different jobs.

Applies to: Function selection; exact feature support remains model-specific.

video
Switch: many sources → selected one display. Splitter: one source → duplicate displays. Matrix: several sources → individually selected outputs. Extender: source → transport pair → distant display.
data
USB switch changes the upstream computer for peripherals. KVM couples video selection with keyboard/mouse sharing.
power
A dock expands one host; laptop charging requires separate documented input, allocation and host-PD support.
Functional path diagram. Arrows show the stated role and direction; they do not report an observed connection.

What the path requires

  • Count sources and destinations and decide extend versus duplicate.
  • List keyboard, mouse, camera, audio and storage data requirements separately.
  • Write resolution, refresh, chroma, HDR, VRR, audio and protected-content requirements.

Do not inherit features across functions

A video switch has no implied USB host path. A USB switch has no implied picture path. A splitter duplicates a source signal; it does not manufacture an independent extended desktop. A dock can contain an MST hub or a USB graphics engine, whose OS conditions differ.

Read EDID and protection behavior

Ask whether the exact device passes, copies or emulates display capabilities and what happens on switching. Confirm the target mode and compliant protected-content chain. Neither EDID emulation nor an HDCP version adds a missing source/display capability.

Your next useful observation

Draw video, USB and power separately, then match each arrow to an exact product specification.

Keep these limits

  • No universal switching-time, HDR/VRR, USB throughput or laptop-charge guarantee.
