Observation lesson

Use the key, latch and clocking as separate clues

A key controls an allowed orientation or variant. A latch retains the mated components. Clocking describes a key’s angular position relative to another named feature. Observe each without forcing a fit.

Applies to: Disconnected observation and interpretation of source-scoped examples. Exercises are illustrative arithmetic, not specimen measurements.

Worked source example

GH has a secure outer latch, and its catalog separately lists keyed housing/header patterns. A latch alone does not identify which keyed variant is present.

Try this observation

Describe where a key sits relative to the latch in the same disconnected view. Record a missing or hidden key as unknown, not “unkeyed”.

Your next useful observation

Obtain a side and mating-face view showing the key and latch together.

Keep these limits

  • A matching candidate is not confirmed identity or compatibility. Do not probe energized contacts or infer geometry from an illustration.
