Cable selection lesson

Ethernet category, channel length and link rate

Select a complete documented channel for the target Ethernet application, then read the actual negotiated LAN rate. Cable category alone does not determine Internet speed.

Applies to: Selected primary manufacturer/tester guidance; no normative table copied, installation certified or network benchmark performed.

Ethernet category, channel length and link rate
Selected applicationSource-defined channel scopeWhat still needs checking
1000BASE-T on Cat5e/ClassDFluke's table lists support for100m channels.Ports, patch cords, installed cable/connectors and a matching test report; a100m loose patch cord is not the default channel design.
10GBASE-T on Cat6A/ClassEAFluke's table lists support for100m channels.Installation, connecting hardware, patch allowances and test limit; LSZH or a metal shell does not certify the channel.
10GBASE-T on existing Cat6/ClassEFluke's guidance gives a reduced reach in its table; other assessment conditions may apply.Do not apply one blanket Cat6 maximum. Have the installed channel assessed for the exact application and alien-crosstalk conditions.
25/40GBASE-T on Cat8Fluke's table identifies a30m maximum channel scope.Exact Cat8/channel/topology and compatible ports; no ordinary RJ45 patch-cord upgrade is inferred.
Integral SFP+ DAC/AOCUse the exact cable PID and length, e.g.1m passive,7m active twinax or3m AOC examples. These are different media/assembly roles from a100m twisted-pair channel. Both host ports and OS versions need support.

A channel is more than one cord

The installed path includes cords, connecting hardware and fixed wiring. Identify channel versus permanent-link report and test limit before reading a Pass. Slim or longer patch cords may require a different allowance; no universal patch-cord substitution is granted.

Construction choices

Stranded conductors, gauge, shielding and jacket are separate selection fields. The Belden example documents four26AWG stranded pairs with pair foil and outer braid. That construction is not an instruction to add shielding or bonding to an arbitrary system.

Rate is not throughput

Negotiated rate describes the local link. Internet service, upstream links, congestion, protocols and endpoint workload determine actual transfer results. A lower Internet result does not alone prove a cable fault.

Your next useful observation

Record the exact model, selected length, both endpoint roles and required application. Keep undocumented properties unknown.
