Console to a portable display: keep picture and power separate

For an Xbox Series S and ASUS XG17AHPE, use the monitor’s Micro-HDMI input for the console picture and its documented USB-C charging input for power. A USB-C charging socket is not a second HDMI input.

Applies to: Documentary HDMI-input recipe; target 1920×1080 at 60Hz, SDR. HDR, VRR, touch and 120/240Hz console modes are outside this example.

What the path requires

  • ASUS XG17AHPE and its bundled power adapter/USB cable.
  • HDMI source-to-Micro-HDMI input cable; select the matching monitor input.
  • Select 1080p60 SDR as a conservative target only if it is offered by the source and monitor.

Use the input designed for this signal

The monitor distinguishes a USB-C DP Alt Mode input from a second charging USB-C port. HDMI sources use Micro-HDMI. Reversing a common USB-C-to-HDMI adapter does not create an HDMI-to-USB-C conversion path.

Power does not travel backwards through the picture cable

Keep the display on its documented independent power arrangement. A USB peripheral or touch function would require separate, applicable documentation and a data path; neither follows from a picture appearing.

Worked documentary examples

Known input, selected baseline mode

Documented outcome: Source-defined path

  • Xbox Series S HDMI output, monitor Micro-HDMI input, 1080p60 SDR, independent monitor power.
  1. Connect with the equipment powered as its manuals direct.
  2. Select Micro-HDMI in the display menu, then confirm the console’s reported mode.
  3. If a picture appears, record the exact mode; this does not prove other refresh rates or features.

USB-C charge cable into charging-only port

Documented outcome: Documented conflict

  • Trying to feed HDMI picture through the monitor’s charging-only USB-C port.
  1. Move picture to Micro-HDMI.
  2. Use the charging USB-C port for the documented power role.

A converter with only 'USB-C / HDMI' on its label

Documented outcome: Missing evidence

  • Direction, output DP Alt Mode and power delivery are unidentified.
  1. Read the exact converter input/output specification before buying or connecting.
  2. Keep display power separate unless exact documentation establishes the required supply.

Your next useful observation

Record the monitor input, console output mode and whether independent display power is present.

Keep these limits

  • No physical console or monitor test.
  • No claim that the console supports every timing in the monitor table.
