Cable selection lesson

Route, store and clean cables by domain

Use the selected cable's bend, load, temperature and cleaning instructions. One storage or cleaning recipe cannot be applied to copper charging, fiber endfaces and speaker cables.

Applies to: Domain-scoped source guidance, no repair procedure, installation approval or maintenance observation.

Route with clearance and strain control

Support the cable so connector housings do not carry pulling or hanging load. Allow space for active electronics, locking mechanisms and bend radius. Avoid sharp edges, doors, wheels, hot surfaces and trip routes. Fixed-installation and moving/flexing limits can differ, as the Phoenix 1407480 sheet explicitly shows.

Coil and identify before storage

Follow the exact product's bend/storage conditions and retain model/length/direction labels. For the documented CORDIAL speaker-cable family, the manual calls for clean dry storage and inspection of housings, insulation and strain relief. It does not authorize repairing other cable types.

Copper data, charging and speaker cable

Inspect external insulation and strain relief while safely disconnected. For the CORDIAL example, use a clean, dry, soft cloth and avoid the manual's excluded chemicals. Do not apply this external-jacket method to contacts or fiber endfaces. Remove damaged assemblies from use; repairs belong with the maker or qualified service.

Fiber and optical assemblies

Do not look into the fiber or use a direct-view magnifier. Keep clean protective caps on unused ends. Cisco's professional procedure requires source isolation, inspection, suitable cleaning and reinspection; it warns that cleaning without inspection can damage equipment. Arrange trained inspection rather than wiping the endface with clothing or using generic household solvents.

Coax and field patching

Preserve coupling/center-contact condition and the exact cable's bend/torque guidance; crushed coax and forced connectors need a replacement enquiry. On installed network paths, retain labels, patch history and test reports so a changed cord does not erase the channel record.

Replacement and disposal enquiry

Retain the failed cable's identity and observed symptom, mark it against accidental reuse and consult the manufacturer or local collection service. Recycling rules depend on location and product; no universal disposal permission is inferred.

Your next useful observation

Record the exact model, selected length, both endpoint roles and required application. Keep undocumented properties unknown.
